Students at Beauclerc Elementary were treated by wonderful adults who took the time to read in the classrooms. Mrs. Lewis (Dawn's mom) read The Boy Who Changed the World by Andy Andrews to Mrs. Donnelly and Jenkins' class. It is an incredible true story that shows children that every choice you make - good or bad, can make a difference. Thank you, Mrs. Lewis for sharing this terrific book with us.

Students wrote letters this week to their penpal, Ssgt. Bryan Wright from Mandarin who is currently serving in Afghanistan with the Air Force. They helped pack a box of snacks, hand warmers and a blanket to keep Bryan warm this winter.

Students received a special treat this week with a visit from Raha Riazati's mom. She taught the class all about her home country of Iran. Students learned the location and geography, art, music, culture and food. They had many questions about history of the country and the effects of the revolution of 1979. Raha's mom also brought in a traditional dish to share.

Van Allsburg Author Study

Fourth graders began an author study of Chris Van Allsburg with Mrs. Hartnett and continued it in their classroom. We have read almost all of this author's terrific fantasy fiction picture books, discussed the attributes of each one and compared the books. Now we are ready to write about our comparisons. Fantastic Day in Riverside

Fourth graders visited the Cummer Museum of Art this week. They learned all about Florida artists and pieces of art that featured Florida. The classes toured the museum and the beautiful English and Italian gardens and walked to the Riverside Memorial Park for a picnic lunch. It was a very fun day.

Fourth graders were brought to tears by the conclusion and epilogue of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes this week. They had some great discussions about war and peace and discovered some long lasting cause-effect relationships. Here is Nicole modeling a pink, silk kimono like the one Sadako wore. And Calen is teaching his classmates how to fold paper cranes.

Mrs. Donnelly and Mrs. Jenkins' fourth graders have a penpal. He is Ssgt. Bryan Wright from Jacksonville, Florida. Bryan is currently deployed in Afghanistan; he is in the Air National Guard. The students have been writing letters and making cards and yesterday they recieved an email from Bryan answering lots of their questions. Thank you, Bryan for all you are doing!

Fourth grade authors enjoyed a treat of tombstone cookies which they decorated for a DEAD word burial. Students have been learning about using synonyms for dead or overused, non-descriptive words in their writing. Words such as like, walk, nice, fun, run, and said were put to rest!

Sensational Symphony

Students in Mrs. Donnelly and Mrs. Jenkins' class enjoyed a field trip this week when fourth and fifth graders from Beauclerc were invited to the beautiful Times Union Center for the Performing Arts to listen to the Jacksonville Symphony. The concert began with the Star Spangled Banner and included pieces from American composers. Thank you, Ms. Laymon for organizing the trip.

Parent night in fourth grade was a terrific success thanks to the students who presented information about narrative writing. Each student used part of a "delicious meal" to tell about an element of a story and they shared some pieces of student writing. They were definitely the best part of parent night!

Corporal Jaclyn Freda (Mrs. Jenkins' daughter) and Staff Sergeant Bryan Wright stopped by Beauclerc for a visit this week. Sgt. Wright will be deploying to Afghanistan soon and wanted to meet the students in Mrs. Donnelly and Mrs. Jenkins' class before he left. The students will begin writing him letters during his deployment.

After drawing a picture on paper students copied their illustration on a fabric square. Mrs. Jenkins sewed them all together to create a patriotic quilt for one of our favorite HEROES! A few finishing touches and the quilt will be done.

Students in Mrs. Jenkins' classes finished reading Shiloh, by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor on Friday. They fell in love with Marty and Shiloh, the dog he bought from a man who was mistreating his dogs. The class was very excited to discover that Shiloh is a trilogy! Next week they will enjoy the Shiloh series videos and then rush to the public library to get started on their summer reading of Shiloh Season and Saving Shiloh. Thank you Mrs. Naylor for an excellent end of year novel.

Fourth graders who met their book goal for this nine-weeks were rewarded by a visit from Bruce Shwedick, reptile expert from the Reptile Discovery Program. Students heard fascinating information about the animals and met a yellow-footed tortoise, an alligator snapping turtle, an African Monitor lizard, an Chinese alligator and fifteen foot Albino Rock Python. Reading Machines in Fourth Grade

Fourth graders in Mrs. Donnelly and Mrs. Jenkins' homerooms have been little reading machines this nine weeks. What really got the students excited about reading was our author study with Mrs. Hartnett in the Media Center. They studied books by Chris Van Allsburg, author and illustrator of some great fantasy fiction. Some students have read 8 books written by Van Allsburg. They created a class attribute chart, wrote brochure-style book reports and took lots of AR quizzes during the study. As a special treat they even watched, Zathura, a movie based on Chris Van Allsburg's book. Now...the reading machines will become writing machines as they begin to compare the books they have read in some expository writing essays! The benefits of our author study are developing the love of reading, having fun, improving reading and writing strategies, meeting the 25-book goal, and great results on DRA and Benchmark scores!!! The more you read, the more you succeed.

We knew this terrific family might not be in Jacksonville long because Destiny's dad is in the Navy, but that did not stop us from loving this awesome kid.
