Dead Word Celebration!

Students from Mrs. Donnelly and Mrs. Jenkins' classes learned how to add more concrete details to their writing by replacing over used words with synonyms they found in a thesaurus. Headstones were made to "bury" the DEAD or over used words. Their dead word graveyard is hanging outside room 44. This activity was followed by a dead word celebration where students decorated headstone cookies and enjoyed a well earned treat.

Beauclerc's READING Kick Off

Partner Reading

This week we practiced partner reading: choosing a partner that will help make you a better reader, talking about books and helping a partner with reading strategies. What fun!

Independent Reading

This week students in Mrs. Jenkins' and Mrs. Donnelly's homerooms have been learning procedures they will use all during the school year. These students wrote a rubric for the expectations of reading independently and then got down to the business of READING.

Dear Students,

I know you are enjoying Frindle by Andrew Clements that I am reading to you in class. Aren't you interested to find out if the main character, Nick will recieve any money from the sale of all of the items that say "frindle" on them? And aren't you asking yourself if his teacher, Mrs. Granger will stop being upset with Nick? Hopefully we will find out this week.

Andrew Clements has written more than 50 books for children and many of those books are excellent pieces of realistic fiction. Remember I told you I was reading Things Not Seen? Well I just finished it! It was really terrific; I could not put it down. It is the first Clements book I read that combined fantasy and realism. I really like it and recommend it for independent reading or a great book to read at home with a parent.
